An llms.txt file is an optional, machine-readable guide that points AI agents toward important content on a website. It may help compatible tools find cleaner, more relevant information, but it is not a guaranteed ranking signal or a requirement for Google AI Overviews. Business owners should treat it as a supporting experiment after the website’s core SEO, content quality and technical accessibility are in good order.

The question matters because more customers now use AI-assisted search and chat tools to research services, products and companies. At the same time, new technical ideas are often promoted before their limitations are clear. This guide explains what llms.txt does, what it does not do and when adding one is worth considering.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file placed at a website path such as example.com/llms.txt. It gives an AI agent a concise description of the site and a curated list of useful pages or Markdown resources.

The official llms.txt proposal, first published in September 2024 and updated to version 2 on August 10, 2026, describes it as a way to help agents use a website. The proposal recommends a simple structure: a site title, a short summary, optional guidance and grouped links to important resources.

Think of it as a guided reading list. A sitemap aims to help search engines discover indexable URLs across a website. An llms.txt file is intended to highlight selected information that an AI agent may need when answering a question. It does not replace your sitemap, robots.txt, visible pages or structured data.

Does llms.txt improve Google AI Overviews rankings?

Google does not require an llms.txt file for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google’s current AI features guidance for website owners says that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in these features. It specifically states that website owners do not need to create new AI text files or special markup.

For Google AI features, a page must be indexed, eligible to appear with a snippet and compliant with Search policies. Familiar work still matters: crawling, internal links, useful textual content, page experience and accurate structured data.

Therefore, do not sell or buy llms.txt as a shortcut to citations. It is an optional layer within a broader AI search optimization strategy, not a substitute for SEO.

When can an llms.txt file be useful?

Your business information is distributed across many pages

A service company may have separate pages for services, industries, locations, FAQs and contact information. A concise guide can clarify which pages are authoritative. This is helpful only when those pages are accurate and available in a form the consuming tool can read.

Your CMS or SEO plugin maintains it automatically

Maintenance changes the calculation. Yoast documents an llms.txt feature for WordPress that can generate and update the file. When a trusted plugin already supports it, testing the feature may require less effort than maintaining a custom file.

You can measure a practical outcome

A useful test has a purpose. For example, you may want compatible agents to find the latest documentation page instead of an archived one. Record the questions you test, the answers returned, the sources cited and any incorrect information. A file that exists but is never checked is not an optimization strategy.

When should you fix the website first?

An llms.txt file cannot repair weak source content. Prioritize the main website when:

  • Service descriptions are vague or duplicated.
  • Prices, policies or contact details conflict across pages.
  • Important pages are blocked, broken or not indexed.
  • Navigation and internal links make key information difficult to find.
  • Pages do not directly answer the questions customers ask.
  • The website lacks a clear business identity, service area or contact route.

These issues affect human visitors and traditional search as well as AI-assisted discovery. Ishu Technology’s guide to on-page SEO without backlinks explains how page structure, content and internal linking contribute to organic visibility.

What should a business llms.txt file contain?

Keep the file short and selective. The proposal uses Markdown, which makes the document readable to people as well as machines. A practical business version may contain:

  • The official business or website name.
  • A factual one- or two-sentence business description.
  • Notes that clarify geography, audience or terminology.
  • Links to main service or product pages.
  • Links to authoritative pricing, policy or support information.
  • A contact page for enquiries requiring a person.
  • An optional section for secondary resources.

Every link should have a clear description. “SEO services for businesses in Jaipur and other markets” is more useful than “click here.” Do not fill the file with every tag archive, thin landing page or old campaign URL.

How should you choose the linked pages?

Start with customer intent. Someone researching your business usually wants to know what you offer, who it is for, where you operate, what conditions apply and how to take the next step. Select pages that answer those questions clearly.

Check each candidate page before including it:

  1. Accuracy: Is the information approved and current?
  2. Specificity: Does the page explain a real service, product or policy?
  3. Consistency: Does it agree with related pages?
  4. Accessibility: Can an unauthenticated visitor access it when appropriate?
  5. Ownership: Does someone know when it needs an update?

Never put customer records, confidential quotations, internal credentials or restricted policies in a public discovery file.

How do you implement llms.txt on WordPress?

WordPress site owners generally have two routes. A supported SEO plugin can generate the file, or a developer can create and maintain it manually. Before enabling a plugin feature, preview the selected pages and confirm that the public URL works. If you manage it manually, make sure another plugin or server rule is not already handling the same path.

After publication, open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a private window. Confirm that it loads, contains only intended public information and uses final HTTPS URLs.

If your website needs technical or content improvements first, review Ishu Technology’s SEO services. The service covers technical SEO, on-page optimization, local SEO, content strategy and search performance analysis based on the website and business goals.

How should you test whether it helps?

Create a test sheet with real customer questions about services, geography, policies and contact routes. Record whether the tool finds the right page, answers accurately and knows when human confirmation is required.

Avoid judging success from one prompt. AI outputs and search results can vary, and not every system supports the proposal. Continue monitoring Search Console and analytics for overall search performance, but do not attribute a traffic change to llms.txt without evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is llms.txt an official web standard?

It is a community proposal, not a requirement that every search engine or AI platform must follow. Support can differ between tools, so implementation should be tested rather than assumed.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt communicates crawler access preferences. llms.txt is designed as a curated guide to relevant, LLM-friendly content. One does not replace the other.

Can llms.txt guarantee that ChatGPT or Google cites my website?

No. It cannot guarantee crawling, inclusion, citations, rankings or traffic. It may make selected content easier for compatible agents to discover, but each platform controls how it retrieves and presents sources.

Should a small business add it?

A small business can test it when the important pages are already accurate and the file is easy to maintain. If the site has only a few clear pages, improving those pages may provide more immediate value.

How often should the file be updated?

Update it when linked URLs, services, policies or priorities change. If a plugin generates it, check the plugin’s update rules and preview the public output periodically.

Should your business add llms.txt?

Add it when your website has trustworthy content, you can maintain the file and you have a clear reason to test agent discovery. Do not delay essential SEO work or expect a new text file to compensate for weak pages.
