If AI search is showing wrong business information, correct the underlying public sources before trying to influence the answer itself. Publish one clear source of truth on your website, make your business profiles and important listings match it, remove or redirect outdated pages, and confirm that search crawlers can access the corrected information. Then document the inaccurate answer, request recrawling where available, and monitor whether cited sources and answers change.

No single edit can force every AI-assisted search product to update. These systems may combine website pages, business profiles, search indexes, third-party listings, and other sources. Your practical goal is to make the correct fact easy to find, consistent, current, and supported by pages you control.

Why is AI search showing wrong business information?

An incorrect answer does not always mean the AI system invented a fact. It may have retrieved an old page, relied on a third-party listing, mixed two businesses with similar names, or interpreted unclear website content. Common examples include:

  • an old address appearing after a relocation;
  • outdated opening hours or phone numbers;
  • a discontinued service being presented as current;
  • two branches being merged into one;
  • the wrong business being associated with a brand name;
  • an old company description being repeated after a repositioning;
  • a product price, availability, or policy being treated as permanent.

The correction depends on the source. If the answer cites an outdated page on your own site, fix that page first. If a business profile is wrong, update and verify the profile. If no supporting source is visible, strengthen the information across authoritative pages and use the feedback option provided by the search product.

Start by recording the exact error

Before changing anything, create a short evidence record. Note the platform, query, date, location or language settings, exact incorrect statement, and any cited links. Save the correct fact and the page that should support it.

How to fix AI search showing wrong business information

1. Create a clear source-of-truth page

Choose the page that should own the fact. Business identity details usually belong on the About or Contact page. Services need a current service page. Locations and hours should appear on the relevant location page. Product specifications and availability belong on the product page.

State the fact in visible, plain language. Do not rely only on an image, a footer icon, or structured data that visitors cannot see. Include a useful page title, a descriptive main heading, and enough context to distinguish the business from similarly named organizations.

If several pages repeat the information, update all of them. Search systems should not have to choose between one page that says “open Monday to Saturday” and another that still says “open daily.”

2. Remove outdated pages and conflicting signals

Search your own site for the old phone number, address, hours, service name, company description, and staff details. Check PDF brochures, archived landing pages, author biographies, legal pages, image captions, downloadable menus, and old blog posts—not only the homepage.

When an old URL has a direct replacement, use a permanent redirect. When historical content must remain available, add clear dated context rather than silently presenting it as current. Update navigation and internal links so they point to the preferred page.

Example: A company moves offices and updates its homepage, but its Contact page, LocalBusiness markup, old recruitment PDF, and map listing still show the previous address. Repeating the new address in more blog posts will not resolve the conflict. The better fix is to update or retire each authoritative source and link consistently to the current Contact page.

3. Correct business profiles and major listings

For local businesses, review the verified profiles that search systems may use. Google advises owners to add or claim a Business Profile and maintain accurate business details. Bing Places also compares submitted details with websites, search engines, and social profiles when validating information.

Keep the business name, address, phone number, website, hours, and primary category consistent where they describe the same location. “Consistent” does not mean forcing identical marketing copy everywhere; it means avoiding contradictory facts.

Use Google’s Business Profile guidance and the official Bing Places information when those platforms are relevant to your business.

4. Make structured data match the visible page

Appropriate Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, or other schema markup can help search engines understand entities and page information. However, markup should reflect content that visitors can see. Do not use schema to assert a different phone number, address, rating, price, or service from the visible page.

Google explains that structured data helps it understand page content, but it does not guarantee a particular search presentation. There is also no special AI schema required for Google’s generative search features. Review Google’s structured-data introduction and generative AI search guidance before adding unsupported markup.

5. Check crawling, indexing, and search eligibility

A corrected page cannot help if relevant search systems cannot access it. Check the HTTP status, robots.txt rules, robots meta tag, canonical URL, authentication requirements, and firewall or CDN controls. Make sure the preferred page is linked internally and included in the appropriate sitemap.

Google states that its existing SEO best practices continue to apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI says public sites can be eligible when OAI-SearchBot is allowed and the host or CDN permits traffic from its published crawler addresses. OAI-SearchBot controls search discovery; it should not be confused with GPTBot, which has a different purpose.

See Google’s AI features and website documentation and OpenAI’s publisher guidance for the current crawler details.

6. Request reprocessing and use feedback tools

After publishing the correction, use URL inspection or recrawl tools offered by the relevant search engine when appropriate. Submit updated profiles through their owner dashboards. If an AI answer provides a feedback control, report the specific false statement and supply the correct source when the form allows it.

Do not repeatedly submit the same issue within minutes. Crawling, indexing, profile review, and answer generation are separate processes, and update timing varies. Record the submission date and review the same query periodically.

What should you avoid?

  • Do not create dozens of thin pages that repeat the correction with slightly different keywords.
  • Do not publish fake reviews, mentions, or citations to manufacture agreement.
  • Do not hide claims in structured data when the visible page says something else.
  • Do not treat llms.txt as a guaranteed correction mechanism. Google states that it does not use the file for its Search features.
  • Do not promise an update date unless the platform provides one for the specific edit.
  • Do not remove useful pages blindly. Redirect or clarify them when people still rely on their URLs.

How do you monitor whether the correction worked?

Repeat the documented query using the same conditions and review the cited sources, not only the wording of the answer. Test a small set of related questions: business name plus location, business name plus service, and the exact fact that was wrong.

Also monitor conventional search results, profile panels, referral traffic, and Search Console. Google’s current generative AI guidance points site owners to its reporting for understanding discovery through generative features. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT referral URLs can include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help identify visits in analytics.

A corrected answer is a useful signal, but accuracy should be maintained at the source. Add business-information checks to website updates, location moves, rebrands, service changes, and seasonal-hours workflows.

When professional help is useful

If the wrong fact appears across several search products, returns after correction, or comes from conflicting technical signals, the issue may require a combined content, local-profile, structured-data, and indexing review. Ishu Technology provides SEO support that includes AEO- and GEO-focused content structure alongside technical and on-page SEO.

To discuss a specific accuracy problem, contact Ishu Technology with the affected query, the incorrect answer, the correct information, and the public page that should be treated as the source of truth.

Frequently asked questions

Can I guarantee that an AI answer will change?

No. You can correct and strengthen the available sources, but third-party search products decide when to crawl, retrieve, and present information. Accurate, consistent source pages improve the evidence available; they do not guarantee placement or wording.

Does adding schema immediately fix an incorrect answer?

No. Schema can clarify page information, but it must match visible content and is only one signal. Correct the page, profiles, listings, links, and indexing problems as well.

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search discovery and GPTBot separately. Review both controls according to your publishing policy instead of assuming they serve the same function.

What if another website is publishing the wrong information?

Contact that publisher with the exact URL and evidence. Meanwhile, make your own authoritative page unambiguous and keep verified profiles current. Do not copy the false claim merely to discuss it without clear correction context.

How often should business information be checked?

Review it whenever an address, phone number, opening hour, service, product policy, or brand identity changes. A scheduled periodic check is also useful for businesses with multiple locations or frequent updates.
